Choose which ABM accounts to work first

A fitting account is not automatically the next account your team should work. Use these worksheets to compare supported opportunities for action, identify research gaps and allocate a finite amount of team time. This is an operating queue, not a prediction of who will buy.

Copy the account prioritization worksheets

Use your own review period and effort estimates. These worksheets prioritize internal work; they do not authorize outreach or override contact restrictions.

  1. 1. Account comparison record

Account / business unit: [reference] ICP version / fit decision: [record] Hard exclusions or unknown prerequisites: [facts] Reason to act now: [verified event, conversation or explicit question] Source / date / contrary evidence: [references] Role and relationship context: [committee record] Next useful action: [specific deliverable] Estimated effort and basis: [time, assumption] Current owner / existing activity: [check for duplication] Queue decision: [work now / research first / defer / exclude] Reason relative to other candidates: [tradeoff] Reconsideration trigger / owner: [condition or date]

  2. 2. Team capacity allocation

Planning period: [dates] Available team time: [hours and basis] Committed follow-up and reply coverage: [hours] Other fixed work / contingency reserve: [hours] Time available for candidate-account work: [remaining hours] Selected account / action / owner / estimate: [repeat per action] Total allocated effort: [sum] Unallocated time: [remaining] If estimates exceed capacity: [reduce scope or defer named actions] Approver / review date: [person, date]

  3. 3. Queue review and change log

Account and previous decision: [reference] New evidence or changed capacity: [fact, date] Estimated versus actual effort: [record] Action completed and finding: [what changed, not presumed revenue] Next decision and rationale: [work / research / defer / exclude] Who takes ownership: [person] Other accounts displaced or released: [references] Contact restrictions checked separately: [workflow] Next review trigger: [condition or date]

Confirm fit before comparing priority

Use the agreed ICP to decide whether your team can serve the account. Keep exclusions and unresolved prerequisites visible. A large company or recent announcement cannot compensate for a product requirement you cannot meet. Prioritization starts after this fit check; it does not replace the account research record.

Compare reasons for action, not alert counts

For each eligible account, record a current supported question, an existing conversation or another specific reason to spend time now. Separate facts from guesses about urgency. Several alerts repeating one announcement are still one event. An account with no useful current action may remain eligible while another account receives attention first.

Allocate effort your team can deliver

List the work required next: checking a source, confirming a role, preparing an asset or handling an agreed conversation. Estimate time from your own workflow, assign an owner and reserve capacity for active replies. Salesforce's ABM guide stresses account selection, coordination and adequate time and resources. The queue rules below are original planning conventions, not a vendor scoring model.

Worked example: four hours of account work

Fictional dispatch-software team: after reserving time for replies and existing commitments, a researcher has four hours available. Account A meets the ICP and has a verified depot announcement; preparing a role-specific workflow question is estimated at two hours. Account B may fit, but its required import capability is unknown; a source check is estimated at one hour. Account C needs a live connector the product cannot provide. Account D fits but would need three hours of research with no current reason to prioritize it.

  • Allocate two hours to A and one hour to B, leaving one hour unallocated for uncertainty. These are illustrative estimates, not productivity benchmarks.
  • Mark C excluded with the unsupported requirement, even if its company size looks attractive.
  • Defer D with a review trigger rather than assigning activity that exceeds capacity. Do not infer that deferred means a poor customer.
  • If B's check confirms a hard exclusion, record it and stop that work. If A takes longer, revise the queue instead of quietly dropping reply coverage.

If you use scores, keep the reasons visible

A score can hide why an account was selected. Document the criteria, weights, missing-data treatment and version before using one. Keep hard exclusions separate from additive points so a prominent brand cannot outweigh an unsupported use case. Do not label a hand-built score a purchase probability. Review borderline decisions and compare them with the source records, not just the total.

Use AI to summarize tradeoffs for human review

Provide an approved AI tool with permitted account records and the available capacity. Ask it to list evidence, unknowns, next actions and effort assumptions separately, then propose a queue that stays within capacity. Require it to flag conflicts and return unknown when information is absent. A human owner must verify sources and approve allocations; AI-generated urgency or predicted revenue is not evidence.

Review what the allocation taught you

Compare estimated and actual effort, research questions resolved and actions completed. Keep replies, booked calls, held meetings and accepted opportunities in separate outcome records. A few successful conversations do not establish that a tier or score caused the outcome. Revisit the criteria when delivery constraints, evidence or team capacity changes.

Who this helps

  • Founders choosing a manageable account shortlist
  • SDR managers allocating research time
  • ABM teams coordinating evidence and sales capacity

Work through the process

  1. 01

    Gate

    Check fit and hard exclusions.

  2. 02

    Compare

Document each next action, evidence and effort.

  3. 03

    Allocate

Assign only the work the team can support.

Record findings and revise the queue.

Questions and answers

How is prioritization different from an ICP?
An ICP defines which companies fit. Prioritization chooses what work to do first among candidates, using current evidence, effort and capacity. An excluded account should not become eligible because it scores well elsewhere.
Do we need three account tiers?
No fixed number is required by this worksheet. Use labels that correspond to actual work and ownership. This template uses four queue decisions rather than prescribing spending levels or contact volumes.
Does a signal make an account high priority?
Only if it is verified, relevant to your supported use case and leads to a useful next action. It still does not establish purchase intent or override fit and contact restrictions.
Can AI choose the accounts automatically?
It can propose a reviewable ordering from supplied records. Keep source verification, exclusions and capacity approval with the accountable owner; do not treat model-generated scores as measured buying likelihood.
